How does Madrid see itself? How does the world see Madrid? For the last 7 years, Monocle Magazine's Madrid correspondent, Liam Aldous has had to reconcile these two (sometimes very different) perspectives for a series of advertorial campaigns in collaboration with Madrid tourism.
Each year he has been tasked with capturing the Spanish capital's creative, designer, and entrepreneurial pulse in fresh and surprising ways. Does Madrid have any postcard-worthy icons? What lays beyond the city centre in some of the lesser-known barrios? What does "the city of the embrace" even mean? Charting Madrid's metamorphosis into a thriving creative capital, Aldous will attempt to attain the elusive answer to one constant question: who is Madrid?
