Giorgetto Giugiaro will talk about Turin design and its history - linked to production, especially to the automobile sector, which has expressed and still expresses worldwide excellence, not forgetting the important designs of brands and social design. Excellencies that could not exist without very high level training institutions since their origins, and that attract students and professionals from all over the world to Turin every year, such as the Politecnico di Torino, the IAAD Istituto d'Arte Applicata and Design, the IED Istituto Europeo di Design, etc.

The title of this paper demonstrates the inevitable contradictory nature of Gala Fernández’s work, who loves and claims her origins, and at the same time continuously flees from them. As Taoism advises, she would like to find the balance, which she considers utopian, always about to fall by jumping from one plate to the other on the scale.

During this conference Gala will explain her experience in the practice of design. Having trained in art and always finding great difficulty in labelling herself in her personal life and in her professional career, the designer and artist denies that these two parts of her life are watertight compartments and affirms, that they are complementary and inseparable parts. A journey full of experiences and stories linked to many places, people and projects.

What happens if I am copied from? What if I am the one who copies? How far does inspiration go and where does plagiarism begin? Is it lawful to copy according to what things? In the world of design, where millions of creations are generated every day, it is possible to find many similarities that are due to different causes.

During the conference, Juli Capella, will analyze the phenomenon of copying, from the perspective of the creator, the architect, the graphic designer, the designer of products and furniture … with aberrant examples in some cases, but ambiguous in others. We will also trace the legal framework of a globalized phenomenon and its social derivations. What would happen if we all copied what others do? The immobility, the paralysis, all awaiting the next. Design must be the tool that promotes innovation.

Andreu World organizes, on the occasion of the Madrid Design Festival 2020, a meeting between Spanish companies that promote international competitions and awards to support emerging talent in different fields of creation such as design, interior design, architecture and artistic crafts. In addition to the Valencian company, Cosentino, Roca, Signes and the Loewe Foundation will participate.

Professional competitions are common in disciplines such as architecture, branding and even automotive, in its most restricted versions. It is a practice that is perfectly understood when it comes to projects that have a high cost and risk. But they are rarely open to emerging talent. For them there are other types of competitions and awards organized by the companies that participate in this meeting, three of them - Andreu World, Roca and Signes - recognized with the National Design Award, among other things, for having made the effort to organize them.

Total design is predicated on the notion that designers like to have control. Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu believe that by critically engaging with other disciplines and breaking from the confines of "architecture" they can actually produce better work.

Neri&Hu's interdisciplinary process is driven by their stance on design agency in a global economy. It is easy to associate industrial, product and furniture design with commerce and thus, commercial pressures. However, the Bauhaus movement started out in the mid-20th century as a reaction and resistance to industrialization and mass production. It liberated the designer from creating environments out of ready-made catalogs.

During this conference it will be discussed how adopting total design, it is possible to create immersive environments where the atmosphere is composed not only by the architectural structure itself, but also by its finishes, lighting, furniture, art works, hardware and even signaling.

What (if anything) is left for designers in the era of Extinction Rebellion? It is not just that no design student is interested in being Philippe Starck anymore, quite a lot of what seem to be culturally sensitive design is made to look futile, meanwhile so many of the once forgotten heroes of the 1960s such as Ivan Illich are being rediscovered. This talk will look at the new relevance of Papanek and his generation, at the continuing struggle between design as a kind of morality, and design as a commercial activity. And also, at what a new generation of designers are trying to achieve.

With this conference Pepe García will try to share his experience in CuldeSac ™ over the past 17 years. I look into the problem, searching for its core, its specificity. It is from this specificity that the answer is generated”.

The universe of María Simun is formed by two worlds or spaces: in one of them fashion overcomes the superficiality of artifice and exists as a means to express ways of being and living. In this world, clothing is revealed as a flag of textures and colors that defines and determines the territory of each person. In the other space, concepts and ideas that shape deep visions about life and people coexist and interact. It is another world that, in the always peculiar imaginary of this visual artist, is symbolically represented by the avant-garde proposals that the VH1 music channel collected. The design task for María Simun consists in the mutual involvement and reciprocal interaction of both worlds or spaces, through an intense and constant creative process in which a native detachment from fixedness prevails.

In 1931 Le Corbusier developed The Architectural Polychromy colours, a collection of colors that constitutes the culmination of a series of experiences carried out from the 20s on different architectural projects. The Polychromy comprises 43 colors harmoniously organized, which allows to create combinations that can be applied directly to the walls designated for this purpose. During this presentation Luis Burriel will talk about the deep imbrication of this catalog with Le Corbusier's activity as a painter and sculptor.

In an age when portable devices and streaming services are making entertainment an increasingly individual experience, what does it mean to participate in viewing a live performance in a group of thousands or tens of thousands?

When music and video can be made in a bedroom on a laptop, what does it demand from an artist to harness the emotion & energy of a large crowd of viewers in real time?

At what point do those individual viewers become a single entity; “an audience”? Now that music, film and television can be programmed to suit our individual schedules, what is the attraction of attending a live event at a specific location and time?

Even to stadium audiences as large as 100,000 people, Williams argues that it is intimacy and emotional connection, rather than simply spectacle, that are central to a meaningful experience for both performer and viewer. But how is it possible to create intimacy on such a vast scale?
